The "Poderi del Todero" winery was established in 2001 when Maurizio Freschi, a wine technician who studied at the famous wine academy in Conegliano, was handed the reins by his father, who had been at the helm of the family winery for more than thirty years.
The estate is situated in Levada di Ponte di Piave, in the centre of an imaginary triangle that takes in Ponte di Piave, Oderzo and Campodipietra. This small, family-run estate encompasses just seven hectares under vine.
We produce a number of different wines. Whites: Prosecco, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio. Reds: Cabernet Franc (Carmènere), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Raboso Piave which stands out for its time-honoured, ancient history and for the fact that it is native to the Sinistra Piave area.
The winery’s flagship wine is its highly traditional Raboso Piave Doc, which is left to age in oak barrels for more than three years. To make it, we use carefully selected grapes, some of which are harvested when over-ripe and some of which are slightly dried out. The grapes are then left to macerate in vats for a full two weeks.
This is how we create “Recandino”, a beautiful archaic term that was used for Raboso back in the 17th century. It is possible that this was the same grape cultivated in the 12th century by the Benedictine monks of the Monastery of Sant'Andrea at Busco, in the municipality of Ponte di Piave, the ruins of which can still be seen just a stone’s throw from the “Poderi del Todero” winery.
